OEM
Microsoft OEM (original equipment
manufacturer) software is meant for distribution by system builders
on new computer systems. There are no qualification requirements to
purchase these products. These products are less expensive than
retail, but cannot be moved from one machine to another machine. If
the machine dies so does the software license. There is no support
for OEM software. OEM software can only be purchased with some type
of non-peripheral hardware device or in system builder packs. OEM
Application and Server products can only be sold in system builder
packs. All OEM Operating Systems being sold outside of a system
builder pack will ship with a FREE hardware device. OEM can install
older versions of Windows and Office.
Retail
Retail or full package product software is the easiest to buy.
It has no requirements to purchase it, but it does cost the most.
The license can be transferred from one machine to another. Retail
product comes with the media. It comes with free
installation support, plus two free incidences.
Academic Retail
Qualified education users can receive special
discounts on boxed, retail versions of Microsoft software by
acquiring the Academic Edition full packaged product (FPP). The
Academic Edition FPP is the same powerful, fully-functional software
as the regular retail version. The only differences are the Academic
Edition label and the discount price.
